2008 Membership Jury Process

2008 Jurors were:

• Barbara Robinson, Director of the Artist Services Program at the Idaho Commission on the Arts served as our outside juror. Barbara has significant experience in jurying and organizing juries for ICA fellowships and grants. We thank Barbara for taking time to offer her expertise and aesthetic input, and for use of the facilities/technical equipment!
• Barbara Bowling, Secretary of BOSCO. Barbara is an enamel and metal artist. LouisesLeap.com
• April Hoff, BOSCO membership committee, and partner of Wingtip Press. April is a painter and printmaker. aprilhoff.info
• Sue Rooke, BOSCO membership committee. Sue is a ceramic artist represented by Basement Gallery, she also teaches this art to youth.
• Kay Seraut, BOSCO membership committee. Kay is a silversmith and jewelry designer. Her work can be seen locally at the Capital City Public Market, the Woman of Steel Gallery and the gift shop at the Boise Art Museum. kayseurat.com
• Patt Turner, BOSCO member and painter. Patt once taught design and painting at BSU.

(Two other members were invited but due to unforseen circumstances, could not make the jury date. They are Craig Clark and Tyler Bush)

Thanks also to Kelli Zabel, Administrative Assistant @ ICA for organizing, loading and displaying the images.

Judging was done blind by having ICA's administrative assistant load and display the images without reference to the artist. Applicants were judged first by the strength of their work as represented by the provided images. A majority vote on the images was an automatic acceptance as a member of BOSCO. If an artist received a split vote, or at least two votes, judges used the artist's statement and resume to influence their decision and another vote was cast. Not all applicants were accepted, however rejected applicants were encouraged to re-apply after further development.

This year the membership committee called for new membership applications with the following requirements:

1. CD with three 300 dpi jpeg images of most current work
2. Updated artist's resume (Word document)
3. Artist's statement of 25-50 words (Word document)

In a furied haste we threw together this year's application requirements, however there are several proposed changes for the 2009 new application process.

• File size limit to 1MB per image
• Required image list to include thumbnails with title, medium, size, and year of work.
• No limit on word count for artist's statements (except that we will ask for shortened versions for the map, and maybe the website or require a link as opposed to displaying long statements)
• Option of flash/thumb drive to submit artwork
• 5-10 images instead of three (we found it difficult to judge with only three images)
• Two membership drives for new applicants - one in November just after the Open Studios event, and one in the spring.
